The Role of Sports in a Time of Crisis

Sports in a Time of Crisis

The coronavirus pandemic has changed every aspect of our lives, and going without sports has shown us all that we take for granted when we watch our favorite teams. Tripp Burton, Upper Hand’s Content Writing Intern and junior at Emory University describes how the Coronavirus pandemic has shifted our global perspective on sports, as well as how it has shaped his new reality.

The Role of Sports in a Time of Crisis

There’s an old cliche that many powerful stories start with.

“Do you remember when?” The simple question freezes moments in time, placing them on a pedestal and subjecting them to reinterpretation, discussion, and, perhaps most importantly, reliving.

Rarely do we recognize their importance in our present lives; maybe that’s why we spend so much time reminiscing on the past and anticipating the future. But every so often, an instance comes around that is immediately recognizable as an inflection point in all of our lives.

March 2020 has undeniably brought forth one of those moments.

A corollary to the “do you remember when” question is “do you remember where you were?” I was on spring break, sitting on my living room couch with my parents and my little sister. I had spent the last day refreshing my Twitter timeline, tracking the shocking news of NBA players testing positive for COVID-19, the NCAA barring fans from March Madness, and the World Health Organization declaring a global pandemic.

Despite the magnitude of the crisis, it still felt distant. That is, until I received an email from my school, informing us campus would close for the semester, and classes would move online. My group chats flooded with messages. I spent the night on the phone with my friends, all of us stunned and dismayed. We were devastated, but eventually, at one point or another, all of us said “at least we can sit around all day and watch sports,” or “at least we can get to the gym more often.”

In a matter of hours, we learned we couldn’t do either. Everything was closed. Everything was cancelled.

Coronavirus and Sports
The Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California, after the NBA canceled games due to a player testing positive for COVID-19

In times like these, sports are the least of our worries. The coronavirus pandemic is a global crisis, devastating millions of people. As of April 1st, the number of reported cases reached over 875,000. Nearly 40,000 people have died. Hospitals are being inundated with patients, being pushed to their breaking point. Countries are on lockdown, people cloistered off in their homes. The terms “social distancing” and “flatten the curve” are now integral parts of our vocabulary. Watching otherworldly millionaire athletes play a game should not be our focus.

So why, then, has the absence of sports felt so arresting?

The answer is simple— sports represent what is lost due to the coronavirus. There are few things that connect people like sports. According to Statista, there are 8.58 million fans of the Dallas Cowboys. To any one person, 99.99% of those fans are complete strangers. But when Sunday comes around, those 8.58 million people share the same intense feelings.

In a time when isolation is the most essential part of life, we all crave connection. No amount of greatest sports moments montages on YouTube, video calls with family and friends, or social media challenges can match the unadulterated communal experience of an NBA Finals, UEFA Euro 2020, or the Olympics.

The Olympics were the last to go, with the decision to postpone coming on March 24. The postponement of the Olympics is the most symbolic repercussion of the coronavirus pandemic. Every four years, athletes from almost every nation in the world gather in one city. National idols, like Michael Phelps or Usain Bolt, are given the world’s attention.

Despite all of its downfalls, the Olympics is our most visceral emblem of togetherness. Postponing the event was necessary, but the hesitancy to do so was reflective of our impossibility to keep apart.

In times of disaster, there are those that rise above. In the sports world, many have come forth to allay the economic hardships faced by part-time workers. Stars like Steph Curry, Kevin Love, Zion Williamson, Drew Brees, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Roger Federer, and countless others are making an effort to support those affected by the declining global economy. Lionel Messi and his FC Barcelona teammates agreed to take a 70% pay cut to ensure that the club’s lower level employees earn 100% of their salaries during Spain’s ongoing state of emergency.

Lionel Messi Sports Coronavirus

The sports stars certainly deserve admiration for their actions. But, again, the sports world is not where focus should be directed. The real heroes during the coronavirus crisis are those medical workers devoting their lives to the well being of hospitalized patients. They have become the ones to display perseverance through fatigue, bruises, and loss.

Dr. Anthony Fauci has become a household name because of his exquisite temperament and honesty in guiding the nation. We will come out the other end of this crisis, and the All-Stars we need to remember are not LeBron James or Giannis Antentounkmpo, but the nurses, doctors, and health care officials who looked a pandemic in the eyes, and defeated it.

This post is just one of hundreds of articles written about the role of sports in a pandemic. The best interpretation of sports in the current moment comes courtesy of Brian Phillips at The Ringer, who wrote that what sports represent “in this moment is a microcosm of our anxiety, ambivalence, and hope— and for those of us living with the uncertainty of these days, of uncertainty itself.”

We don’t know when this crisis will pass, just like we don’t really know who will win the championship. All we can do is put in the necessary work to make our hope a reality.

It has been three weeks since that night on my living room couch. I have, like everyone else, been living in a muddled state, not knowing when normalcy will return. Perhaps this is the new normal, at least for a little while.

My friends and I have moved on from our initial concerns of no sports. We still miss the thrill, the drama, and the escape sports give us.

But we miss each other more. We now long for times when we can all be in the same room again, telling those “do you remember when” stories. For now, we must find togetherness in being apart, connection in isolation.

It is the only way the coronavirus can become a “do you remember when” story.

Traditional At Home Workouts

Turn Daily Life into a Workout
The small steps you take to make your time at home beneficial to your fitness life will go a long way. If you live in an apartment building, take the stairs instead of the elevator. If you can, walk to do your quick errands. Cleaning the house and other housework can also burn calories. Continuing to stay up and active, even in the smallest ways, is the most important aspect to your new at home fitness plan.
Be Creative
Working out at home can be repetitive and restrictive. It’s important you make it as fun and enjoyable as possible! During your time at home, incorporate your workout routine with the show you are binge watching. Start family workout sessions. Use furniture as workout equipment. Create games out of the fitness program you select. The more interesting the idea, the better it will make your at-home workout.
Bodyweight Exercises
Having in-home gym equipment is not common for many people. Bodyweight exercises are nevertheless great ways to compensate for not being able to visit your fitness center. Consecutive sets of push-ups, planks, step ups, crunches, and lunges are just a few of the many methods of capitalizing on bodyweight exercises at home. Working out at home may not your usual way to get exercise, but you may find switching up your typical routine energizing! Additionally, you may find a new club or studio whose format you love in this period where many franchises are releasing public workouts. Ultimately, there are endless ways you can capitalize on your extra time at home; we highlighted only a few. No matter what you do, the key is sticking to it. No at-home fitness plan will work without the same level of dedication and effort put into workouts at your usual gym or studio.

2020 NBA All-Star Game Preview: New Rules and Format https://upperhand.com/2020-nba-all-star-game-preview-rules/ Thu, 13 Feb 2020 16:13:48 +0000 https://upperhand.com/?p=13493

2020 NBA All-Star Game Preview: New Rules and Format

NBA All-Star Game Changes
The 2020 NBA All-Star Game will take place in Chicago this weekend. For the second consecutive year, LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo won the popular vote and were named team captains. Notable picks for Lebron James included Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, reigning Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, and young superstar Luka Doncic. Team Giannis includes the likes of Joel Embiid and Trae Young. However, the biggest storylines surrounding this year’s All-Star Game are not about the players or contests, but about the format and structure of the game. The league altered the format of the game, factoring in donations to charities and homages to Kobe Bryant, and making changes to the scoring system and running clock. Here is the full list of NBA All-Star Game new rules.

2020 NBA All-Star Game’s New Rules and Format

  • Each of the first three quarters will begin 0-0. Each quarter will last 12 minutes.
  • After the third quarter, the scores from each quarter will be combined, much as they are in a normal game.
  • The fourth quarter has no running game clock. The quarter will end when the first team reaches the Final Target Score, set at the beginning of the quarter.
  • The Final Target Score will be set by adding 24 points to the team with the lead cumulative score after the third quarter.
  • For example, if the cumulative score of the first three quarters was 110 to 100, the target point will be 134 (The leading score plus 24). In order to win, the team with 110 points at the beginning of the fourth quarter would need to score 24 points before the other team scored 34 points, or the team with 100 points at the beginning of the quarter would need to score 34 points before the other team scored 24 points.
  • This target point is of course a tribute to Kobe Bryant, who wore 24 in the latter half of his career.
  • The winners of the first, second, and third quarters receive $100,000 per quarter. This money will be donated to a Chicago community charity of the captain’s choosing.
  • If the first or second quarter ends in a tie, the $100,000 charity award for that quarter will be added to the next quarter’s award. If the third quarter ends in a tie, the $100,000 award for that quarter will be added to the award of the overall 2020 All-Star Game winning team.
  • If one team wins each of the first three quarters and the NBA All-Star game, $500,000 will be donated to the winning team’s charity and $100,000 will be donated to the losing team’s charity.
  • The 3-Point Contest will include 2 shots from 6 feet beyond the 3 point line, since many shooters are making those shots in games today. The NBA said this change was made “to keep up with the times and new playing styles”.

Fan Reactions to the NBA All-Star Game Format Changes

2020 NBA All-Star Game
New rules and format changes to the 2020 NBA All-Star game leave fans with mixed reviews. (Image by Business Insider)
The new NBA All-Star format has been met with both applause and criticism. The focus on charity was received well and added more importance to the All-Star Game. It’s believed this will encourage the players to take the game more seriously, as in recent years the game has resembled a mix of a glorified scrimmage and highlight reel. The new NBA All-Star Game scoring system, however, has so far been an unpopular change, with many confused by the system and seeing no real need for it. The NBA  has not confirmed if these changes will continue to be upheld in future All-Star weekends.

Kobe Bryant Tributes at the NBA All-Star Game

While fans seem to be generally confused around the scoring change, nearly all have rallied around the weekend’s tribute to Kobe Bryant. In addition to honoring the late basketball hero and superstar in the All-Star Game scoring change, each player on Team Giannis will wear number 24 while each player on Team LeBron will wear number 2, in honor of Kobe’s daughter Gianna. Ultimately, the league commissioners recognized the 2020 NBA All-Star Game format needed changes if it were to remain popular. In changing the format, the league is catering to its fans and attempting to deliver the best on-court production possible. The added stakes, tributes to Kobe, and a promising dunk contest will certainly give the weekend more excitement and a smashing success.

How Two Businesses Leveraged Upper Hand to Increase Revenue and Client Base https://upperhand.com/how-two-businesses-increased-revenue-with-upper-hand/ Tue, 19 Nov 2019 00:44:06 +0000 https://upperhand.com/?p=10656

How Two Businesses Leveraged Upper Hand to Increase Revenue and Client Base

Two baseball businesses grew revenue with Upper Hand
In an ideal world, the core focus of operating a sports training business would be on developing clients and not on continual operational tasks. However, this utopian scenario rarely represents real life, and many business owners find that the majority of work ends up being spent in a vortex of administrative tasks. A sports training business is typically created out of a passion for the sport and desire to help people improve, and when owners aren’t able to focus on that passion, the business has a higher probability of failing. Finances need to be one of the main focuses for the running of a business like this too. Using companies like Gleneagles Securities can help with organization whilst other needs are being met to keep the business thriving. Upper Hand’s software was created to help sports and fitness businesses automate the front desk and back office tasks, and nothing makes us happier when our customers are able to spend more time doing what they love – working with clients.

Giving Businesses a Real Competitive Advantage

Buck Fastpitch Academy and Ruggiero Hitting Academy share many of the same goals. They aim to elevate their clients baseball and softball skills through intense development, training, and mentoring of players. Both organizations place high value on one-on-one training session, skill clinics, and other programs. From the start, their elite offerings drove year-long demand, causing them to experience significant growth. However, this quickly led to a vortex of administrative work that distracted from their passion for coaching. Anthony Ruggiero was solely responsible for daily operations of Ruggiero Hitting, such as scheduling, accounting, and marketing. It quickly became impossible for Anthony to maintain efficiency with hundreds of schedule request emails and calls flooding his inbox. He wasted valuable time trying to manage key aspects of his business while also juggling the instruction component of the facility. It would have made more sense for him to get help from things like kruze accounting, as this would have given him more time to focus on other aspects of the job. Of course, Anthony had extremely important roles. Perhaps he should’ve delegated some of these responsibilities out more, allowing people to focus more time on each aspect of the business. Marketing is such a crucial thing for businesses, so people need to spend more time in that department. Anthony could’ve even looked into using something like Upleap to grow an Instagram account. Instagram, and other social media platforms, are so important to help businesses grow these days. Creating an Instagram account would be beneficial and using Upleap could help. Of course, those wondering “Is Upleap worth it?” could always read the review on Platypus Reviews. That could help businesses to grow.   Tina Buck-Harth was in a similar situation at Buck Fastpitch Academy. She says the quick growth of her business “empowered us to find a comprehensive solution that could effortlessly handle back-end tasks, streamline scheduling and event management as well as oversee accounting processes.” They searched for a baseball software that would manage all of these tasks and run their facilities seamlessly. In came Upper Hand.

The Transition to Upper Hand’s Sports Software

Upper Hand’s powerful and comprehensive cloud-based solution converts a suite of business management tools into an easy-to-use platform that helped Ruggiero Hitting elevate its status in the competitive, ever-growing sports industry. After their interactions with the Upper Hand team, Anthony and Tina both decided to implement Upper Hand to manage their administrative burdens. Their transitions into the software were quick and easy, and they were up and running in no time.

Read the full story on Ruggiero Hitting’s results

After just a few weeks, Anthony and Tina had noticeable differences in their operations. Anthony was able to devote 90% of his time towards personal instruction, and Tina saved nearly 14 hours a week. With this reallocation of time commitments, they were able to devote themselves fully to teaching the sport they love. Because of their passion, Anthony and Tina have grown Ruggiero Hitting and Buck Fastpitch into terrific training facilities. Their partnership with Upper Hand granted them the ability to grow their passions.

Software That Provides Immediate Revenue Growth

Upper Hand did more than just save time for Ruggiero Hitting– they increased revenue by nearly 120%. The streamlined scheduling capabilities negated the tedious planning on Anthony’s part, as the effortless online booking system easily track availability, assigns staff members, creates custom events, and manages facilities. This allowed Ruggiero Hitting to schedule 60 extra sessions a month, and book spots for an extra 40 students. In addition to the software, Anthony appreciates the relationship he has built with the Upper Hand team. In sales and customer service, Upper Hand’s easily accessible representatives actively solicit feedback to create an open channel for communication. Team members take a personal approach to every customer to ensure success is maximized in all components of their business.
“The experience was much more personal and left me feeling relaxed,” Anthony said. “They weren’t trying to sell a service, but instead were listening to our concerns and wanted to make sure we were satisfied with the solutions they offered.” -Anthony Ruggiero
But it’s not just Anthony and his staff that have benefited from Upper Hand. David Yarmesh, a parent of one of Anthony’s young athletes did as well.
When Ruggiero Hitting transitioned to Upper Hand, it totally streamlined everything, including both the business end and the customer end. It mitigated communication waste and created an instant, real-time schedule that allows for customers to make changes as needed. Scheduling and managing our sessions is super convenient now.” -client of Anthony’s
Tina and Buck Fastpitch enjoyed positive growth after implementing Upper Hand’s sports software, as well. They have increased revenue by 30%, and saw a growth in clientele reach nearly 2,000%. Buck Fastpitch was also able to conduct an additional 23 clinics a year. The dramatic increase in clients and attendance fueled quick and sustainable growth for Buck Fastpitch.
“Now with Upper Hand software we’re just so easily able to schedule a clinic and have people register online, and it takes us out of the whole administrative process.” -Tina Buck
The cases of Buck Fastpitch and Ruggiero Hitting tell a similar story. Both were young, successful business, but they were bogged down in monotonous administrative work that was blocking further growth. Anthony and Tina wanted a change; they wanted the ability to focus on their passion, not the business logistics. In partnering with Upper Hand and implementing their sports software, they did just that. Now that Upper Hand’s software easily manages the tedious aspects of sports businesses, Anthony and Tina are able to direct their focus to their trainees and clients. Therefore, with this increased commitment to their sport, Anthony and Tina continue to grow the passion for baseball and softball. The right software can turn any business into a well-functioning machine, implementing sports software to payroll software can bring a better system to businesses who are in need. 4 Highlights from the 2019 World Series https://upperhand.com/4-highlights-from-the-2019-world-series/ Thu, 07 Nov 2019 21:52:30 +0000 https://upperhand.com/?p=10646 It has been a week since the Washington Nationals captured their first-ever World Series title, defeating the Houston Astros in seven games. After the initial onslaught of reactions, we took some time to highlight key takeaways from the Nationals historic, unexpected, and memorable run through the 2019 season.

2019 World Series Takeaways

Road Warriors

When it comes to any professional sports playoffs, there is high precedent given to the idea of home-field advantage. It is perceived that playing on your own field, in your own stadium, in front of your own fans is supposed to be just that— an advantage. When it comes to the 2019 World Series, that is all for naught.
For the first time in history, the road team won every game. The World Series is divided in a 2-3-2 format, meaning the team with home-field advantage hosts the first two games, and then returns home for the pivotal final games. The Nationals stymied the Astros in Houston the first two games, returning to DC with a commanding 2-0 lead. In front of rabid Nats fans expecting to witness a title-clinching victories, the Astros won three straight and crushed the spirits of the DC faithful. The Nationals, a team built on resiliency and a never-doubt-us mentality, stunned the world in winning Games 6 and 7 in Houston. Teams battle all season in order to gain home-field advantage. The 2019 World Series taught us that gaining home-field advantage is only half the battle.

The Ewing Theory

Sportswriter Bill Simmons famously coined an idea called The Ewing Theory, inspired by former New York Knicks forward Patrick Ewing. In 1999, Ewing was injured in a playoff series against the Pacers, and the Knicks seemed dead in the water. Yet, they won 3 of 4 games to advance to the NBA Finals.

The theory is two-fold— first, a team must have a dominant all star, widely considered to be a once-in-a-generation talent. That player, however, never wins anything substantial with that team. Second, that player leaves the team, the team is written off, only for them to bounce back and finally win meaningful games.

The Nationals were the first ‘Ewing Theory’ team to win a title. Their ‘Ewing’ player was Bryce Harper, a former MVP, Rookie of the Year, and six-time all star. Harper shunned the Nationals to sign a then-MLB record 13 year, $330 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. Pundits immediately bounced the Phillies to the top of the league, and the Nationals to the bottom. The results of the deal? The Phillies missed the playoffs, and the Nationals are world champions.

Young Star Juan Soto

How were the Nationals able to recover from the loss of Harper?

The emergence of new, young, and exciting new stars. Juan Soto, a 21 year-old left fielder, grew to become a league icon this postseason. Admired for his style of play, Soto electrified crowds, delivering game-changing home runs and frequently igniting a spark in the Nationals. His behavior at the plate, although criticized by some, is nevertheless entertaining, and effective. Baseball is frequently considered to be a boring and uneventful sport— Soto flips that narrative on his head through his charismatic and confident style of play. Add that to his on-field play, which is stellar, and the MLB may have a new superstar. One thing is for sure— with Soto in the mix, the Nationals have no love lost over the departure of Bryce Harper.

Expect the Unexpected

We’ve seen this time and again with title teams this year. The Toronto Raptors lost their franchise player and battled back to win an NBA title. In addition, the St. Louis Blues were at the bottom of the standing midway through the season, only to catch fire and win their first Stanley Cup title. The Nationals took a page from their playbook, as a result overcoming a dismal start to the season to stun the world

On May 23, the Nationals were 19-31, good for the 4th worst record in the MLB. All they did was tear through their schedule the rest of the way, ending the season with a 93-69 record, good enough for a Wild Card berth. They snuck by the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card game, advancing to face the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers were dominant in 2019, winning the most games in the National League. The Nationals won 4 games to 1. Next were the St. Louis Cardinals and their suffocating defense, led by the historic Jack Flaherty. The Nationals swept. All that was left was the team with the best record in baseball— the Houston Astros. However, we know how that ended.

The 2019 Nationals are an incredible story, and certainly one of the most memorable championship teams in recent memory. In order to win their first World Series title, they overcame the loss of an all-time great player, a horrid start to the season, and a brutal postseason lineup of opponents. Along the way, new stars emerged, and new legends were made. In 2019, the Washington Nationals cemented themselves in history as an unlikely, but deserving, World Series Champion.

An Overview for Tracking and Using NPS in the Sports and Fitness Industry https://upperhand.com/sports-and-fitness-net-promoter-score-overview/ Wed, 23 Oct 2019 20:24:24 +0000 https://upperhand.com/?p=10599 If you are the owner of a sports training facility, yoga studio, or other business in the sports and fitness industry, then no doubt you understand the importance of maintaining a good reputation among your customer base. People talk, text, Skype, and communicate in dozens of other ways; and you want the majority of your customers to speak well of your company.

However, you may wonder how you can best determine the overall level of customer satisfaction with your service, and how to act on that information. Net Promoter Score (also known as NPS) can provide a key piece to that puzzle.

NPS Defined

Net Promoter Score is a customer satisfaction metric based on a fundamental question:
“On a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being most likely and 0 not likely at all, how likely are you to recommend us to a friend or family member?”

NPS surveys come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, but at their core they are built around this one key question. Once the survey’s data has been compiled, NPS is often calculated within a range of -100 to 100. Every “promoter” of your company (9 or 10 responses, for instance) ranks on the positive side of the ledger; “detractors” (0 to 6 responses) register as minus points. The final tally indicates where your company resides on the customer satisfaction continuum; generally speaking, a score of +50 or above is considered to be excellent.

While NPS offers a simple premise, there are several benefits associated with tracking and analyzing this high-level metric.

5 Reasons to Track NPS

1. It Provides a Succinct Overview of Current CX Trends

While NPS is by nature a simple metric, it is useful at providing a bird’s-eye overview of where your company currently stands with regards to customer experience and satisfaction, as well as the direction in which your company is heading. High NPS indicates that your business processes are successfully generating good customer experiences, whereas low (or negative) NPS signals that there is an urgent need for improvement.

2. NPS Surveys are Customer Friendly

Very few people (if any) enjoy taking surveys that last 15 or 20 minutes. This simple fact illustrates why many surveys have such low engagement rates. On the other hand, the NPS survey could take as little as 15 seconds to complete. This makes it extremely appealing to the average consumer.
Of course, you may want to add a question or two onto your NPS survey in order to glean deeper insights into customer responses, which leads us to point #3…

3. NPS Surveys Allow for Additional Feedback

4. NPS Allows You to Focus on the Entire Customer Experience

Some surveys are specifically geared towards quantifying customer satisfaction with regards to one interaction. (Such as a phone survey taken after an interaction with a customer service representative). NPS is designed to be different. Although previous customer-company interactions may play an important role in the ultimate response given, an NPS survey is at its heart a measure of how the customer feels about your company as a whole, instead of an individual employee.

5. NPS Correlates with Business Growth

It’s no secret that there is a strong correlation between high NPS and exceptional business growth. For example, one study found that a 12-point increase in NPS leads to, on average, the doubling of a company’s growth. Another study of Net Promoter Score in relation to CAGR (compound annual growth rate) demonstrated that NPS accounted for 92% of the variation in future revenue for several major US airlines.

Clearly, NPS is an important metric to track.

3 Ways to Use NPS to Improve Client Experience

While there are several ways to leverage NPS into growth opportunities, the following 3 points may prove to be especially helpful:

1. Add Strategy Informed Questions to Your NPS Survey

You want your NPS survey to give customers the freedom to provide insightful feedback. At the same time, you want to provide enough structure to encourage responses that are, first and foremost, actionable. For instance, if you are looking for ways to enhance the client experience you may want to add a multiple choice question that focuses on which area(s) your customers would like to see improved (e.g., check-in process, quality of equipment, quality of instruction, and so forth).

2. Act on Feedback Received From Customers

Once you’ve received actionable feedback, don’t delay: promptly make the suggested changes, or at least explore options that will help you meet your customers in the middle. For the most part, an NPS survey that doesn’t prompt action is useless.

3. Reward Promoters and Pursue Passives and Detractors

NPS surveys can also help you to segment your customers according to their satisfaction level. This will allow you to reward loyal customers, and entice passive users through discounts, promotional offers, or free trial extensions. It will also let you pursue indifferent or unhappy customers (an apology and “peace offering” can go a long way). Whether it’s mitigating damage to your brand or building up your advocate base, NPS segmentation is a helpful tool when used properly.

In whatever business you’re in, NPS can play a key role in the marketing decisions you make, the business processes that you adjust, and the overall customer experience that you provide. Ultimately, all this feeds into your bottom line.

NFL Season Takeaways: Week 5 https://upperhand.com/nfl-season-takeaways-week-5/ Mon, 14 Oct 2019 21:49:19 +0000 https://upperhand.com/?p=10573 3 Takeaways From This Season Thus Far

In Backups We Trust

Setbacks are inevitable. In every NFL season, each team will experience multiple personnel losses. The most devastating, and often disastrous, occur at the most important position in sports- quarterback. Within the first few weeks, Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Eli Manning, Nick Foles, Drew Brees, and Ben Roethlisberger all required replacing with backups. The results? Better than expected:

  • Jacob Brissett and Teddy Bridgewater impressed, going 3-2 and 3-1, respectively
  • Gardner Minshew II and Kyle Allen far outperformed expectations, showing some special talent along the way
  • Daniel Jones led a thrilling game winning drive in his first career start

Many said these teams were hopeless without their starting QBs. All have responded with resounding performances, proving that the backups are not just capable players, but star players. Which could very well mean that some sports fans could be looking to their US Sportsbooks and wanting to change their bets on certain teams or players!

New Rules Make No Sense

This NFL season is replay happy. Over the summer, the NFL passed a new rule allowing coaches to challenge pass interference calls. This was in response to numerous missed calls throughout the 2018 season, most notably in the NFC Championship game.
So how is this rule going? In short, terrible.

The new rule was implemented to avoid disaster. But, as Tony Dungy said on NBC’s Football Night in America, “I thought this was going to be a disaster… and I believe it is.” Coaches are challenging pass interference, but they rarely get overturned.

In a crucial play late in the 4th quarter of their game against the Chiefs, Colts receiver TY Hilton was called for offensive PI. Colts head coach Frank Reich challenged the call. Multiple replays show Hilton barely contacting the defender. Yet, it was not overturned. There have not been any blatant miscalls yet, but it’s only a matter of time before this new rule drastically impacts the outcome of a game.

The Future is Here

For years, the NFL has been dominated by the same elite class of QB. The group of Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, and Ben Roethlisberger has dominated the league for years, redefining every record imaginable. They have largely been untouched by time- the average age of that group is 38. Their careers are nearing the end.

With the fall of one group comes the rise of another. Patrick Mahomes, Russell Wilson, Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott, and others are taking the baton from the old guard. Wilson and Jackson are dual-threat MVP candidates that have the ability to change any game with their arm or their feet. Who knows how well these candidates may shake up the odds in the Online Sportsbook circles, but it’s expected to be quite significant as their popularity grows. It probably wouldn’t come as a surprise to learn that fans will be looking for the best Wilson and Jackson memorabilia before long. Luckily, places like BuySideSports.com can help you find the best Lamar Jackson products on the market so you can continue his rise to stardom and the title of MVP. With that being said, one person doesn’t make a team. Goff, Watson, Prescott, and Wentz are young and still have plenty of room to grow.

And then there is Mahomes. Simply put, he may be the most talented QB in the history of the league, and he is only 24. After winning MVP last year, he has put up insane numbers through the first month. More so than the stats, his style of play simply cannot be ignored. He does things with football that no other person in the league would even think of doing. He gained fame with no look passes and creative scrambles, and has continued to add to the highlight tape. Patrick Mahomes is already one of the most unstoppable QBs of all time, and he is just getting started.

The first month is done. There are still more than 10 games left to play in the season. The first stretch has taught us a lot, but we still have more questions than answers for almost every team in the league. But, the NFL season is back, and there is more to talk about than ever.

New Apps, Wearables and VR: How Gamification has Transformed Fitness https://upperhand.com/gamification-the-future-of-fitness/ https://upperhand.com/gamification-the-future-of-fitness/#comments Fri, 02 Aug 2019 21:03:44 +0000 https://upperhand.com/?p=10456 In today’s era of entertainment, gaming has quickly become highly profitable. This increased attention to gaming crosses various industries. Recently, the booming fitness industry has begun to capitalize on the widespread love for competition-based games, seeing tremendous growth because of it.

Fitness gamification creatively infuses the highly popular elements of competitive video games into workouts. With gamification, the fitness industry has revitalized customer’s passion for an active lifestyle.

The allure around gaming is multifaceted

Structuring fitness activities and workouts to resemble games addresses a large complaint many have with fitness- a lack of noticeable progress. The use of milestones and scores in gamified workouts allows for easy tracking of gains and losses. Instead of waiting weeks and months to see any progress, the win/loss nature of games grants instant workout feedback and gratification.

Gamification appeals to sedentary gamers who value the imagination and challenges of video games. Those that enjoy video games’ immersive stories can see fitness as pointless, or a means to no end, however, by incorporating game-like competition, there is a distinct goal to work towards. It makes working out, which many find hard to enjoy on its own, subsidiary to the game.

Video games are typically long struggles for success. To win, constant effort and engagement is required. Few are won all at once; it takes continued excellence to beat the game. This structure reflects a fit lifestyle. Improvements aren’t quickly noticed, but rather come with hours of dedication.

Gamification is applied in all corners of the fitness industry, but we will focus on wearables, apps, virtual reality, and classes. These areas capitalize on rewards, motivation, immersion, and team creation.

Wearables

Using gamification in wearables personalizes fitness, making the user accountable for their own fitness success. Because wearables directly inform the user of their activity, it is up to them to alter or maintain that level of activity. This form of gamification is beneficial for developing intrinsic motivation, as it is dependent on the user to better their ‘scores.’

A great example of gamifying fitness through wearables is the Fitbit watch. One of the pioneers in the wearable industry, Fitbit offers a variety of bands that sync with their app. The app organizes the data into a rewards program. The more active a person is, the more rewards the app provides. This little bit of motivation inspires users to increase their activity level in order to obtain more rewards. Fitbit is not the only smartwatch on the market–there are many others with a vast array of various features. In fact, one study reports that as many as 1 in 6 American adults owns a smartwatch with fitness capabilities.

Apps

Apps are the most actualized, accessible, and widespread realizations of gamification. The fitness industry is being remodeled by the thousands of fitness apps currently available. As is true with wearables, apps provide transparent and real time performance measures. Apps, however, have more creative possibilities than wearables.

With over 1 million users, Zombies, Run! is a perfect example of a gamified fitness app. The app combines running with a thrilling storyline based on survival- the more you run, the more likely you are to escape the hordes of zombies chasing you. The app creators created an experience where “every run becomes a mission where you’re the hero.”

In taking the fun and excitement of a zombie game and funneling it into an app, Zombies, Run’s appeal is as a game, not a fitness tracker. They have made running, often a monotonous routine, an addicting game with intense stakes. Zombies, Run! has skyrocketed in downloads since it’s debut several years ago, and with fitness gamification only rising in profitability, we can expect downloads to increase this year.

Virtual Reality

Using virtual reality in fitness gamification transports people to an alternate world that distracts from the were exercise and puts focus on the game. Gamification in virtual reality hides the tedious and ‘boring’ routines of work outs behind the immersion of VR games.

VR fitness is still in early stages, but there are established examples in the industry. The Black Box studio in San Francisco offers a full virtual reality workout for its members. They have their own virtual reality game, and their private rooms make use of resistance bands and weights to create a full body workout during the game. Users report that they often feel as if they have done little work after completing a workout.

This is one major benefit of gamification through VR- the rift between actual effort and perceived effort. Black Box members feel they exerted less energy than they actually did. Because of this, virtual reality can push people past their perceived limits, as they are more focused on winning the game than the demands of the workout.

Classes

Fitness classes combine data-driven gamification with team competition. In expanding the game to more people, classes provide a new layer of motivation. Intensity and dedication increase in group workouts, especially those with competition involved. Many gamified fitness classes are structured around high scores and leaderboard; striving for the top of the leaderboard every class, therefore, naturally leads to beating personal bests.

Many companies incorporate gamification into their programs. Life Fitness partnered with VirZoom to gamify cycling classes, using simulated competitions like horse racing and motorsports. There are other methods too, though. A gym in Britain offers Fortnite dance classes to increase youth participation. In addition, Pursuit by Equinox and Surfset in Toronto provide gamified classes in cycling and surfing.

For instance, an example of a franchise that gamifies fitness is OrangeTheory. They use heart rate monitors as their scoring system, pushing members to best both their own previous scores and the scores of those around them. Members say “the competitive side of me thrives on that energy so the heart rate monitor is like I’m competing with myself and my peers at the same time.” Above all, this provides extra motivation and inspiration to improve personal fitness.

The future of fitness gamification

Gamification in fitness is still a new trend, but has already shown to be a valuable innovation. It eliminates many of the things people don’t like about working out– repetition, no discernible progress, and boredom. By crossing fitness with games, there is more motivation, interest, and feelings of accomplishment. The growth in wearables, apps, virtual reality, and classes helped gamification become a major fitness genre.

Gamification inspires many to get active and stay active; those who have never thought of working out are now doing so because of things like Zombies, Run!, Black Box, and Orange Theory. In conclusion, gamification makes fitness less of a have to do and more of a get to do.
